fueling up in challis. even with soaring fuel prices middle fork trips are pretty inexpensive vacations for private floaters. the cost of this trip divided 12 ways was only $135/each. even adding our hotel and food in stanely to the trip cost leaves it well below $200/each. what can you do for 3 days that only costs you $200 or less and includes all food, beverage, travel, accommodations?
most middle forkers don't care for the short, three day, trips but they do care about having a good time. one way to ensure a good time is to start off easy and whether it be a 3 day trip or an 8 day trip a night in stanley is an easy way to begin.
the views are great, the food is great and cooked by someone else ;) enjoy a hot tub in the evening, a nice shower and breakfast in the morning and still arrive at boundary by 9:00 am, or 8:00 am as was the case on this trip. the rest of our group camped at boundary and for a 3 day trip one more night of camping, especially in good weather, is a great idea. however we have learned that it's just a bit easier on us overall to stay in stanley and save the work of making and breaking camp at boundary, especially when the weather is less than ideal for camping.
andrea hauls in a fish at sunflower hot springs.
melinda catches a fish at survey and on a fly no less! now she can hardly wait till her august trip. this was melinda's and my first time at survey camp. the rocks you see along the shore continue throughout much of the camp so it's not a camp for those with weak ankles, knees or legs ;)
our last three boats run cramer. they take the usual line, but this flow is a bit more erratic than the flow we had april 29th and smakcs around quite a bit more.
mike, tom, blake, andrea, lloyd, jason, aaron, dave, tommy, melinda, jed and randy who got this permit and all of us on the river. thanks randy!
this is a selway warm up trip for randy, blake and i. we figure there is no better way to prepare for a 47 mile, 4 day selway trip than by taking a 100 mile, 3 day middle fork trip. we launch june 6th with vicki and company. this middle fork trip is becoming our method of operation more and more as time goes by. whether it be for a 3 day trip or longer we enjoy this format for our trips because it creates a more relaxed approach than does camping at boundary. some people disagree.....right up until they are breaking a rainy or snowy or frozen boundary camp after a rainy or snowy or frozen night at boundary and then they better understand. stanely only has about 35 nights each year that don't hit the freezing mark. |
